As I type this, it’s dumping outside of my window. I wish I wasn’t stuck in the office, but, I’m leaving for L.A. tomorrow (Consumer Ski Show) and I need to get some work done. Check out these photos that have landed in my email box this morning and get out there and shred. Snowbird opens on Friday and most resorts are opening more terrain. Most of the resorts picked up about 8 inches of snow and there is snow in the forecast for the rest of the week and next week. Hopefully this will break the high pressure that’s been camped out over the west for the last month and we can get some decent storm cycles going.
Anyway, I’m hoping that my jetting to L.A. will keep the snow falling here in Utah. That’s usually how it works when I’m out of town. I’m also hoping to do a little surfing while I’m on the left coast. Stay tuned.
The snow gods aren’t smiling on us yet, but at least the temperatures are dropping enough to get some serious snowmaking done. Park City Mountain Resort opened today. Snowbasin, The Canyons, Brighton, and Wolf Mountain will all be opening on Saturday. This is great news, and from where I’m sitting in Phoenix right now, I’d rather be out riding chairlifts and ripping groomers. But, I guess I’ll have to settle for a round of golf with my father-in-law instead. Get out there and make some turns for me.
Solitude opened on Friday and I went up with a couple of folks from work to make some turns. While the turns were far from epic, it was great to be out riding. And like I always say snowboarding is always better than not snowboarding. Solitude’s snow making crew has really done an incredible job, when you think that it has been 50 degrees up there during the day. The coverage on the runs is great and no base damage occurred.
So, while the riding isn’t the greatest, the golf this weekend was fantastic. I managed to get away from the wife and the child for a few hours on Sunday and squeezed in 18 holes at Bonneville. Mid 60’s in Salt Lake in early November is pretty nice regardless of the snowboarding situation.
The good news for all of you out there is that I’m going to be heading to Arizona for Thanksgiving and then I’ll be in LA for a trade show the week after that. This is good because whenever I leave town this time of year it always dumps. Last time I went to L.A. for this show I think it snowed 4 feet while I was out of town. Pray for snow! I’ll be praying for surf too, as I’m hoping to have a chance to paddle out at Huntington and catch a few while I’m near the ocean.
Edit – Unfortunately the Canyons has delayed opening for the time being as have Snowbird and Alta. But, Solitude will still open on Friday! See you up there and PRAY FOR SNOW!
Opening day is fast approaching and if what the resorts are telling me holds true. We’ll be riding lifts by the weekend. Solitude is a go for Friday. The Canyons has confirmed that they will be open on Saturday. Get those boards waxed up and get ready to ride. In 3 days the winter season begins for real. And it looks like some more snow on Tuesday and Friday. Keep your fingers crossed and hope for a big dump. Check out the view from the Canyons Dreamcatcher webcam taken this morning.
I’m real glad it’s snowing in the mountains today. Well, it’s raining at my house in Salt Lake, but it’s snowing in the mountains. Check out the Ski Utah Mountain Cam Mosaic Page for proof. The National Weather Service is calling for around a foot at Brighton. The Indian Summer we’ve been having has been great for climbing and hiking with the dog, but, come on. I’m ready to ride.
Saturday November 3rd was a good day to get psyched to ride. RideUtah.com and Ski Utah sponsored the Fat Flake Festival at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake. We set up a huge rail jam with snow trucked down from Brighton and rails donated by PCMR and The Canyons. DJ Knucklz and Mark Frank Montoya spun tunes and there was even a 80’s ski costume contest, that for some reason was won by a guy in vintage alta wear. Wierd. Anyway, enjoy this video by Park City TV.
I shot some video too, but, I’ve been a little too busy with getting the snow report up and running to get it edited. Maybe later.
